Ashes of Creation Studio Shuts Down, Steam Offers Refunds

The ambitious MMORPG Ashes Of Creation has been effectively canceled following the sudden closure of its developer, Intrepid Studios. This development has prompted an unusual response from the Steam platform, which is reportedly offering refunds to players who purchased the game during its brief Early Access period, despite the purchase falling outside the standard refund window.

The game launched into Steam Early Access on December 11, 2025, after nearly a decade of development that began with a successful 2017 Kickstarter campaign raising over $3.2 million. The public Early Access launch was intended to be a new phase of open development with the community. However, the studio's operations collapsed in early February 2026.

A WARN notice filed in California confirmed the permanent closure of Intrepid Studios, resulting in 123 employees losing their jobs. The shutdown appears to have been precipitated by an internal conflict. In a Discord statement, co-founder and creative director Steven Sharif claimed he resigned after the company's board began directing actions he could not ethically support. His departure was followed by the resignation of much of the senior leadership team, after which the board initiated mass layoffs.

This abrupt termination of development has left the game's future in doubt and has invalidated a key promise made on its Steam store page. The product description explicitly stated that the purchase "includes one month of game time after Early Access." With the studio shuttered and the game pulled from sale, this promised content will never be delivered.

This broken promise is the basis for Steam's exceptional refund processing. The platform's standard policy allows refunds within 14 days of purchase and with less than two hours of playtime. Players and observers have argued that this policy does not reasonably apply here, as the core promised content—the month of post-Early Access game time—was never made available for evaluation within that refund window. Steam support appears to be acknowledging this unique circumstance, approving refund requests for players who cite the undelivered promise in their support tickets.

For the thousands of backers who supported Ashes Of Creation on Kickstarter years ago, the situation is particularly disheartening, as crowdfunding platforms typically do not offer refunds for failed projects. The Steam refund avenue is specifically for those who purchased the game directly through that storefront during its short-lived Early Access availability. Players who bought the game on Steam are advised to submit a refund request through Steam Support, clearly referencing the unfulfilled promise of one month of game time as the reason for their claim.

The closure of Intrepid Studios and the effective cancellation of Ashes Of Creation mark a significant and disappointing conclusion to one of the most watched crowdfunded MMORPG projects in recent years.
