Guild Wars Reforged Brings Major Updates to Classic MMO
ArenaNet has announced Guild Wars Reforged, a significant revitalization of the original Guild Wars game set to launch on December 3. This announcement comes during the 20th anniversary celebrations of Guild Wars Prophecies, the title that launched the beloved franchise in 2005.
The project represents a collaborative effort between ArenaNet and 2weeks, a development team formed in 2024 by former ArenaNet staff members. The 2weeks team brings over 14 years of combined experience working on the original Guild Wars, providing deep institutional knowledge for the revitalization project.
Guild Wars Reforged will introduce a series of updates designed to make the classic MMO more accessible to both existing players and newcomers. All updates will be completely free for current players, eliminating any paywall barriers for the veteran community. The initiative aims to preserve the game's core identity while improving the onboarding experience for new players.
The original Guild Wars continues to offer a unique MMO experience with its skill-based combat system, diverse PvE and PvP challenges, and the expansive world of Tyria. Players in Guild Wars 2 may find particular interest in revisiting the Hall of Monuments, which connects achievements between the original game and its sequel.
ArenaNet emphasizes that Guild Wars Reforged is not a one-time update but rather the beginning of an ongoing improvement process. The company plans to continue collaborating with 2weeks for future enhancements beyond the December 3 launch.
To showcase the upcoming changes, ArenaNet will host a special livestream on November 19 at 11 a.m. Pacific Time on their official Twitch channel. The stream will feature developers from both 2weeks and ArenaNet, along with special host Laranity, providing the first detailed look at Guild Wars Reforged in action.
